In 2016 the National Autistic Society surveyed 2,000 people with autism about their employment status, with findings of only 32% being in full or part time employment and out of those that are unemployed, 77% of them do want to find work. The report also states that 60% of employers do not know where to go and that 60% of employers are worried about getting the support wrong for people on the spectrum. This could be due to a lack of knowledge on autism.
As someone on the autism spectrum I wanted to step in and offer an idea that would help both autistic people and employers. The idea is to create an internship scheme that would feature a buddy system that will provide support to both the employee and employer and will be able to show what benefits and skills an autistic employee can add to the workplace.
